THE DHOLE OR ASIATIC WILD DOG
- It is the only endangered wild pack-living canid in the tropical Indian forests
- It is considered at high risk of extinction with endangered category on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List
- The diurnal activity of the dholes had the highest temporal overlap with leopards and the lowest with clouded leopards.
- Sympatric refers to animals, plant species, and populations within the same or overlapping geographical areas.
- They operate in packs of 5 to 10, but dholes were once widespread in larger groups of more than 30 across southern and eastern Asia.
- Factors that have contributed to the ongoing fragmentation of its populations include:
- Habitat loss
- Declining prey availability
- Persecution
- Disease
- Interspecific competition.
- The sympatric association such as overlapping prey availability or habitat suitability have facilitated co-existence or even cooperative behaviours between dholes and tigers in Manas National Park.
