17th Divya Kala Mela: Disability Art Fair India

The Disability Art Fair India, also known as Divya Kala Mela, is a groundbreaking initiative by the Government of India aimed at showcasing the creativity, talent, and entrepreneurship of persons with disabilities.

The 17th edition of this inclusive art exhibition for Divyangjan in India was recently held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, from August 16 to August 23, 2024. Inaugurated by Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar and attended by Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai, the event was a remarkable example of empowerment through art for differently-abled individuals.

What is Divya Kala Mela?

Started in 2022, this government-supported art fair for disabled artists is part of the larger mission of social and economic empowerment led by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan). It is a cultural mela designed to bring disabled artists, entrepreneurs, and artisans from across India to one platform.

This art and craft fair for persons with disabilities in India provides not just visibility but livelihood opportunities to more than 100 participants from 20+ states and UTs.

Highlights of the Raipur Edition

  • Cultural events promoting disabled talent in India, including music, dance, and drama performances.

  • Sale of eco-friendly products, lifestyle items, clothing, home décor, and packaged food created by Divyang artists.

  • Launch of Divya Kala Shakti job fairs and Loan Melas to support small businesses by differently-abled entrepreneurs.

A National Platform for Inclusion

This inclusion fair is not just about business—it's a celebration of inner strength. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rebranding of the term "disabled" to "Divyang" (divine body) reflects the purpose behind such Indian disability events—changing mindsets, promoting dignity, and ensuring accessible platforms for growth.

The disabled artist exhibition is gaining popularity in multiple cities, reflecting a broader shift toward recognizing the unique capabilities of persons with disabilities in India.
