History and Significance of National Film Awards

Established in 1954 to promote cinematic excellence in India
Initially called 'State Awards' for films released in 1953

Objectives:

- Promote unity and integrity of the nation through cinema
- Foster study and appreciation of cinema as an art form

Evolution of awards:

- Started with limited categories, expanded over time
- Best Actor and Best Actress awards introduced in 1968
- Commemorates the release of "Raja Harishchandra" (1913), India's first feature film

Selection Process and Award Categories

Two-tier selection process for Feature Film section:
- Five regional panels shortlist entries
- National panel decides winners
Separate juries for Non-Feature Film and Best Writing on Cinema sections
Dadasaheb Phalke Award given to veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty
