Icelandic businesswoman and B Team CEO Halla Tomasdottir has been elected as the country's seventh President, with 34.3% of the total votes cast.

 In a historic vote, Icelandic businesswoman and B Team CEO Halla Tomasdottir has been elected as the country's seventh President. According to the final results announced by the Icelandic national broadcaster RUV, Tomasdottir secured an impressive 34.3% of the total votes cast, emerging victorious over her closest rival, former Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir, who garnered 25.2% of the votes.

The presidential election, held on June 1, 2024, witnessed a diverse array of candidates, including Tomasdottir, Jakobsdottir, Director General Halla Hrund Logadottir (15.1%), comedian Jon Gnarr (10.2%), and Professor Baldur Thorhallsson (9.8%). However, it was Tomasdottir's campaign, centered around fostering societal discussions and active citizen participation, that resonated most strongly with the Icelandic electorate.

The Incoming President Halla Tomasdottir, a prominent figure in the business world, will assume the presidency on August 1, 2024, succeeding the outgoing President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson. Her election marks a significant milestone, as she becomes the second woman to hold the nation's highest office, following in the footsteps of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, who became the world's first democratically elected female president in 1980.

During her campaign, Tomasdottir emphasized her vision of transforming the presidential residence, Bessastadir, into a "home for our national compass," fostering unity and actively engaging with the Icelandic people. Her message of inclusivity and societal dialogue struck a chord with voters, who sought a leader committed to bridging divides and promoting national cohesion.

Iceland has long been a trailblazer in promoting gender equality and empowering women in leadership roles. The country's political landscape has been dominated by prominent female figures, with Vigdís Finnbogadóttir paving the way as the world's first democratically elected female president in 1980. Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir followed suit, becoming Iceland's first woman prime minister and the world's first openly gay head of government in 2019.
