Introduction of New Criminal Laws

• Three new laws replace colonial-era legislation: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)

• Aim to modernize and Indianize the criminal justice system
• Focus on justice rather than punishment, reflected in the term 'Nyaya Sanhita' (Justice Code)

• e-Sakshya: Enables digital recording and storage of evidence, including videos, photos, and witness statements
• Nyaya Setu: Integrates police, medical, forensic, prosecution, and prison systems for streamlined information access
• Nyaya Shruti: Facilitates court hearings through video conferencing
• e-Summon: Allows electronic transmission of court summons to police stations and individuals

Key Features and Objectives of the New System

• Mandatory forensic investigation for crimes with sentences of 7 years or more
• Aim to complete cases, including Supreme Court judgments, within 3 years
• Establishment of Forensic Science Universities to produce 36,000 experts annually
• Introduction of Directors of Prosecution to monitor the prosecution process
• Integration of technology to enhance efficiency and transparency
• Citizen-centric approach to align with constitutional principles

Implementation and Future Outlook

• Chandigarh set to become the first administrative unit with 100% implementation
• Extensive preparations including training, infrastructure upgrades, and recruitment of IT specialists
• Appeal for public participation and awareness to combat misinformation
• Potential to position India as a global leader in modern, technology-driven criminal justice
• Emphasis on addressing contemporary issues like drug addiction through a holistic approach
