Four apps for new criminal laws are unveiled by Amit Shah

Home Minister Amit Shah launched four new apps for The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) new criminal laws introduced nationwide on July 1, 2024.

Introduction of New Criminal Laws

Three new laws replace colonial-era legislation: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)
Implemented nationwide from July 1, 2024
Aim to modernize and Indianize the criminal justice system
Focus on justice rather than punishment, reflected in the term 'Nyaya Sanhita' (Justice Code)
Designed to address contemporary needs and align with constitutional values

Technological Integration: Launch of Four New Apps

e-Sakshya: Enables digital recording and storage of evidence, including videos, photos, and witness statements
Nyaya Setu: Integrates police, medical, forensic, prosecution, and prison systems for streamlined information access
Nyaya Shruti: Facilitates court hearings through video conferencing
e-Summon: Allows electronic transmission of court summons to police stations and individuals

Key Features and Objectives of the New System

Mandatory forensic investigation for crimes with sentences of 7 years or more
Aim to complete cases, including Supreme Court judgments, within 3 years
Establishment of Forensic Science Universities to produce 36,000 experts annually
Introduction of Directors of Prosecution to monitor the prosecution process
Integration of technology to enhance efficiency and transparency
Citizen-centric approach to align with constitutional principles

Implementation and Future Outlook

Chandigarh set to become the first administrative unit with 100% implementation
