History of 90m Javelin Throws

In a thrilling event at the Diamond League meet in Doha, India’s Neeraj Chopra achieved a historic milestone by crossing the 90-meter mark in the men’s javelin throw.

This remarkable achievement made him the 25th athlete in the history of 90m javelin throws to join the elite group of javelin throwers who have crossed this distance.

Neeraj Chopra’s Historic 90 Meter Javelin Throw Record

On his third attempt, Neeraj Chopra launched the javelin an astounding 90.23 meters, marking his entry into the prestigious history of 90m javelin throws and the list of 90m javelin throw record holders.

However, the excitement didn’t end there. Germany’s Julian Weber soon outdid Chopra by throwing 91.06 meters, earning him the 26th spot in the history of 90m javelin throws and the Diamond League title.

Organizers called this competition "one of the greatest javelin competitions of all time,”  highlighting the intense rivalry and high performance.

The 90m Club: A Milestone in Men’s Javelin

Crossing 90 meters in the men’s javelin throw (800g) is considered a major milestone in athletics.

Since the late 1980s, the men’s javelin 90m milestone has been breached only 129 times by 26 different athletes globally, which forms the core of the history of 90m javelin throws.

Among them, Czech legend Jan Zelezny stands out with 34 such throws, holding the world record javelin throw distance of 98.48 meters, set in May 1996 in Germany.

Zelezny is also the coach of Neeraj Chopra, who has often spoken about admiring Jan’s technique and precision — a key part of the history of 90m javelin throws.

Notable Athletes and Countries in the 90m Club

Germany has dominated this elite group with 7 members, including Johannes Vetter and Julian Weber.

Finland, known as the spiritual home of javelin, and Czechia, represented by Zelezny and Jakub Vadlejch, are also significant contributors to the history of 90m javelin throws.

With Neeraj Chopra’s recent achievement, India has proudly joined this global fraternity of top-tier javelin throwers, further enriching the history of 90m javelin throws.

Diamond League and Doha: Hotspots for 90m Throws

The Diamond League javelin results show that Doha’s Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium has been a favorite venue for many athletes breaking the 90m barrier.

Five members of the 90m club, including Chopra and Weber, achieved their best throws here.

This venue holds a special place in the history of 90m javelin throws. Another notable venue is Kuortane, Finland, which has witnessed multiple 90m+ throws, adding to the ongoing history of 90m javelin throws.

The Evolution of Javelin Throw Distances

The 90m barrier, once a rare feat, seems to be witnessing a resurgence in the 2020s.

While the 1990s saw 7 new members entering the club and about 40 events featuring 90m+ throws, recent years have already added 7 more members halfway through the decade.

This trend marks a new chapter in the history of 90m javelin throws, suggesting that we may be entering a golden era of men’s javelin, marked by increased competitiveness and improved techniques.
