HUID Silver Hallmarking in India

From September 1, 2025, India has introduced HUID silver hallmarking for silver jewellery and articles voluntarily, marking a significant upgrade in how consumers verify the purity and authenticity of silver products.

This move by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) aligns silver jewellery with the already established gold hallmarking system, using a digitally traceable format that empowers buyers and safeguards consumer interests.

The Evolution of Silver Hallmarking in India

Silver hallmarking in India began voluntarily in October 2005, regulated under IS 2112 standards. Jewellers who conformed to BIS specifications were issued registration certificates, allowing them to sell hallmarked silver jewellery.

With increasing consumer demand for transparency and quality assurance, BIS has revised the standard to IS 2112:2025, replacing the earlier IS 2112:2014 version. This revised standard officially introduces HUID silver hallmarking for silver jewellery.

What is HUID Silver Hallmarking?

HUID (Hallmarking Unique Identification) is a 6-digit alphanumeric code assigned to each hallmarked piece of jewellery. The introduction of HUID silver hallmarking ensures:

  • Complete traceability of silver items

  • Consumer access to verification via the BIS Care App

  • Authentication of the item’s purity, date of hallmarking, and registration details

Under the new system, each hallmarked silver article must display three components:

  1. BIS Standard Mark with the word ‘SILVER’

  2. Purity Grade (e.g., 925, 958, 999)

  3. HUID Code

This modern framework simplifies hallmarking and enables digital verification of silver jewellery, providing a secure silver hallmark verification process for consumers.

Infrastructure and Scale of Implementation

As of 2025, 230 BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) operate across 87 districts, and over 32 lakh silver jewellery articles were hallmarked in FY 2024–25.

The BIS Care App allows public verification of HUID silver hallmarking by scanning the HUID code, ensuring consumer confidence and quality assurance. These centres provide testing, hallmark issuance, and quality control, forming the backbone of India’s hallmarking infrastructure.

Stakeholder Involvement and Public Awareness

To ensure smooth implementation, BIS conducted a stakeholder consultation on August 7, 2025, attended by over 80 participants, including jewellers, AHC representatives, and consumers.

BIS is actively:

  • Conducting awareness campaigns via branch offices

  • Promoting HUID benefits on social media and public platforms

  • Educating jewellers and consumers on new purity grades and marking format

This ensures everyone understands HUID silver hallmarking, silver purity hallmark, and the hallmarking standards for silver.

Step-by-Step Guide for SSC Aspirants

  1. How to check HUID silver hallmark: Scan the HUID code using the BIS Care hallmarking app.

  2. Verify silver jewellery hallmark using the BIS Care App: Confirm purity, date of hallmarking, and BIS registration details.

  3. HUID-based silver hallmarking process in India: Visit BIS-recognized assaying and hallmarking centres for hallmarked silver jewellery.

  4. Consumer benefits of HUID silver hallmarking: Transparent transactions, nationwide recognition, and digital traceability.

SSC aspirants must remember the difference between gold and silver HUID hallmarking, the new silver hallmarking purity grades 958 and 999, and the IS 2112:2025 silver hallmarking guidelines explained.

Final Thoughts

The introduction of HUID silver hallmarking marks a significant milestone in India’s jewellery industry, ensuring complete transparency and traceability for consumers. By integrating a 6-digit alphanumeric HUID code, buyers can now verify the purity, date of hallmarking, and registration details of silver articles through the BIS Care App.

The updated IS 2112:2025 standard also introduces new purity grades 958 and 999, simplifying the hallmarking structure while maintaining high-quality standards.

With 230 BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) across the country, the system guarantees nationwide verification and quality assurance. Digital traceability not only empowers consumers but also strengthens trust in the jewellery market.
