India to Host the 2025 FIDE Chess World Cup

India will host the renowned FIDE Chess World Cup 2025, marking a major milestone as it takes on the responsibility of hosting its first major international chess event since the 2022 Chennai Chess Olympiad.

India is set to host the prestigious FIDE Chess World Cup 2025, marking a major milestone as the country takes on the role of hosting its first significant international chess event since the 2022 Chennai Chess Olympiad. This announcement is expected to further enhance India's position in the global chess community, especially given the nation's growing influence in the sport.

Tournament Details
The FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 will be held from October 31 to November 27, 2025. The tournament is crucial, featuring a knockout format with over 200 players from around the world. It also plays an important role in the qualification process for the Candidates Tournament, offering three coveted spots. These spots are vital, as the Candidates Tournament determines the challenger for the World Chess Championship.

Initially, FIDE had listed India as the host for the event in its 2025 calendar. However, the announcement was briefly retracted, leaving the status as "to be announced." Despite this, sources from the All India Chess Federation (AICF) have confirmed to Sportstar that India has secured the hosting rights, reaffirming the country's commitment to hosting the event.

India's Chess Achievements
India has made a notable impact in the FIDE Chess World Cup in recent years. In 2023, R. Praggnanandhaa made history by winning the silver medal after a narrow defeat to Magnus Carlsen in the final. His impressive run through the tournament drew global attention and highlighted India's growing influence in chess.

Viswanathan Anand, one of India’s most iconic players, remains the only Indian to have won the FIDE World Cup, claiming back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2002. These victories, during a time when the tournament included a round-robin format, cemented Anand’s legacy as one of the greatest chess players and bolstered India's standing in the international chess arena.

Arjun Erigaisi and the Path to the 2026 Candidates
Along with Praggnanandhaa and Anand, Arjun Erigaisi has made significant strides in international chess. Erigaisi came close to qualifying for the 2026 Candidates Tournament through the FIDE Circuit ratings in 2024 but narrowly missed out, finishing behind Fabiano Caruana. His strong performance on the circuit highlights his potential as a future contender in top-tier chess events.

Importance of Hosting the FIDE Chess World Cup
India’s role as the host for the 2025 FIDE Chess World Cup holds great significance. The event will not only showcase the country’s rich chess heritage but also bring global attention to the sport in India. Hosting this high-profile tournament will help promote chess at the grassroots level and inspire the next generation of players.

At a time when young talents like Praggnanandhaa and Erigaisi are gaining international recognition, the 2025 World Cup provides them with an opportunity to compete on home turf, which could have a pivotal impact on their careers.
