India-UAE Ties: Multi-Sectoral Pacts & Partnership Agreement

India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed several agreements during their diplomatic visit in February 2024, aiming to boost bilateral business, trade, investments, and technological cooperation. The UAE is India's third largest trading partner, with UAE firms investing nearly $17 billion into India. The visit also signified closer India-UAE strategic alignment amid India's tensions with China and Pakistan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in February 2024. This significant diplomatic visit saw both nations sign numerous agreements aimed at boosting bilateral business, trade, investments and technological cooperation.

With over $85 billion in annual trade, UAE is currently India's third largest trading partner. UAE firms have cumulatively invested close to $17 billion into India as well. Hence deepening economic ties is mutually beneficial for both rising Asian powers.

The visit also holds major geopolitical significance amid India's tensions with China and Pakistan. The agreements signal closer India-UAE strategic alignment.

Bilateral Investment Treaty

Both countries signed a bilateral investment pact that removes barriers and obstacles for Indian and Emirati companies investing across each other's markets.

The treaty provides multiple protections and assurances around cross-border investments which should significantly boost FDI flows in both directions. It brings more transparency, predictability and legal cover for global business expansions.

For India, this facilitates capital inflows from UAE to finance domestic infrastructure growth ambitions. For UAE, this enables tapping into India's rapidly growing consumer market through local production.

It is a win-win treaty accelerating economic cooperation visions.

India-Middle East Trade Corridor

Leaders also inked an ambitious deal to construct the India-Middle East Economic Corridor (IMEC). This multimodal connectivity project aims to link India with West Asia and Europe via both shipping and rail routes.

For Indian exports, IMEC provides an alternative corridor skirting rival China to access European markets much faster. The dedicated freight route sharply reduces transit times compared to traditional sea journey via the Suez Canal.

IMEC requires major upgrades to Chabahar Port infrastructure which India is financing. Rail links connecting Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries would also boost regional trade.

The corridor lanes integrate India into global supply chains more seamlessly, elevating its strategic importance for trade.

Connecting Digital Payments Platforms- Link UPI with AANI

The national digital payments systems of both countries were interlinked during the visit. India's famous Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will now achieve full interoperability with UAE's domestic application 'Aani'.

This enables real-time, low-cost fund transfers between India and UAE by seamlessly bridging the payments infrastructure gap between the two monetary systems.

The linkage provides a major convenience boost to the large Indian diaspora in UAE who frequently remit money back home. It would also facilitate tourism spending and business investments in both directions.

RuPay debit/credit payments network was also connected with UAE's local JAYWAN card scheme under another deal.

Partnerships in Futuristic Technologies

Recognizing the scope for collaborations in emerging technology arenas, India and UAE inked a few partnerships in sectors like 5G connectivity, cloud computing, clean energy, space research and semiconductor chip fabrication.

5G and Cloud Infrastructure

Indian telecom operators can now leverage UAE's Matinee Global's cloud infrastructure to roll out 5G services quicker in India. UAE's early 5G adoption provides valuable insights.

Space Research

ISRO and UAE Space Agency agreed to cooperate on joint space science projects, astronaut training, spacecraft systems etc. This boosts both countries' extraterrestrial exploration capabilities.

Clean Energy

Tapping into UAE's expertise with renewable energies, collaboration pipelines were opened up to develop commercial-scale solar, wind and nuclear plants in India.

Semiconductor Fabrication

UAE also committed investments to set up semiconductor fabrication plants in India under the latter's new $10 billion incentive plan to establish a vibrant electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

AI and Drones

India invited UAE's sovereign investment entities to fund its AI and drone startups which can expand into Dubai's market through enablement centers being launched.

Cultural Cooperation

Both countries signed pacts on restoring archival material and artifacts preservation by integrating their national archives and museums bodies. India will receive UAE's assistance in developing a heritage maritime complex at Gujarat's Lothal.

The cultural cooperation symbolizes deep civilizational links spanning centuries when Indian merchants frequented Arabian ports for spice trades. The agreements rekindle historic bonds between the two societies.

The high-profile diplomatic visit has exponentially expanded India-UAE bilateral cooperation across multiple fronts. The comprehensive strategic partnership catalyzed during this landmark event will nurture greater regional stability and shared prosperity for both nations over the coming decade.
