New EVM Ballot Paper Guidelines by ECI

To enhance voter experience and clarity during elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced major revisions in the EVM ballot paper design. These changes aim to improve readability, uniformity, and accessibility for voters across India, making it easier to identify candidates and cast votes confidently. For SSC aspirants, this update is crucial under topics such as electoral reforms, EVMs, and governance.

Overview of EVM Ballot Paper Changes

The EVM ballot paper redesign comes as part of a broader set of 28 initiatives by the Election Commission of India over the past six months. These initiatives focus on streamlining electoral processes and making elections more voter-friendly.

The updated EVM Design Guidelines have been formalized under the Conduct of Elections Rules, ensuring standardized ballot paper formats across the country.

Key Features of the New EVM Ballot Paper

1. Coloured Candidate Photographs

  • One of the most visible changes is that EVM candidate photos will now be printed in full color.

  • This enhancement helps voters identify candidates easily and reduces confusion, especially in constituencies with multiple candidates.

2. Enhanced Photo Space

  • The candidate’s face will occupy three-fourths of the allotted photo space on the EVM ballot paper, providing better visibility and recognition.

3. Uniform Font and Style

  • All candidates’ names, including the NOTA option (None of the Above), will now appear in the same font type and size.

  • The uniform font in EVM ensures consistency and improves readability for all voters, including the elderly and differently abled.

4. Candidate Layout

  • Each EVM ballot paper will now accommodate a maximum of 15 candidates per sheet.

  • This layout improvement reduces clutter and makes the ballot easier to navigate.

5. Placement of NOTA

  • The NOTA option will always appear after the last candidate’s name, ensuring it is clearly visible at the end of the list. This aligns with the new EVM Ballot Paper Layout 2025 guidelines.

Implementation and Rollout

The Election Commission EVM Guidelines have been communicated to all Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of States and Union Territories for immediate implementation. The first official rollout of the redesigned EVM ballot paper will be in the upcoming Bihar Elections 2025, marking a historic step in modernizing electoral practices.

Following Bihar, the changes are expected to be implemented nationwide in all states and general elections.
