ICC CEO Steps Down Due to Concerns Over Pakistan's Readiness for Champions Trophy

Geoff Allardice has stepped down from his position as CEO of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Geoff Allardice, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has resigned at a critical time, just 21 days before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is set to be hosted by Pakistan. Sources suggest that his resignation was influenced by his inability to provide a clear assessment of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s readiness for the tournament.

Concerns Over Pakistan’s Readiness

Allardice’s resignation has heightened concerns about the organization and execution of the Champions Trophy 2025. Despite being one of the most prestigious events in international cricket, there have been ongoing questions regarding the readiness of the host nation’s infrastructure.

Reports indicate that renovations at key stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi are behind schedule, with doubts about whether they will meet the January 31 deadline.

PCB’s Assurances vs. Reality

The PCB has repeatedly assured both the ICC and global cricket fans that the stadiums will be ready in time. However, a report from Pakistan’s leading English daily, Dawn, described the renovation efforts as “almost impossible” to complete on time. The PCB’s failure to provide a clear progress update may have contributed to Allardice’s frustration and eventual resignation.

Allardice’s Tenure and Challenges

Geoff Allardice, who became ICC CEO in November 2021, led the organization during a period of significant change, including the introduction of new formats like the ICC World Test Championship and efforts to expand the game’s global presence.

However, the issues surrounding the Champions Trophy 2025 seem to have played a central role in his decision to step down. Sources suggest that Allardice faced considerable pressure to ensure the tournament’s success but struggled to obtain a clear picture of Pakistan’s preparedness.

Impact on ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Allardice’s resignation casts a shadow over the upcoming Champions Trophy, raising questions about the ICC’s confidence in Pakistan’s ability to host the event smoothly. With the tournament scheduled to start in February 2025, and tickets already sold, the ICC may need to explore contingency plans, given the incomplete renovations and ongoing logistical challenges.

PCB’s Significant Investment

The PCB has invested around PKR 12 billion in upgrading the three stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. Despite this considerable financial commitment, delays in equipment delivery and clearance processes, particularly in Karachi, have slowed progress. Bilal Chohan, the official overseeing the renovations in Karachi, expressed frustration over the delays and criticized the lack of support for the renovation team.

What’s Next for the ICC?

With Allardice’s resignation, the ICC now faces the challenge of finding a new CEO while ensuring the smooth conduct of the Champions Trophy 2025. The organization will need to collaborate closely with the PCB to resolve concerns over stadium readiness and logistical issues.

The resignation of such a prominent figure so close to a major tournament is unprecedented and could have significant implications for the ICC’s reputation and the future of international cricket events.
