Pritish Nandy: A Versatile Icon in Indian Arts and Media

Pritish Nandy, the renowned poet, journalist, filmmaker, and former Rajya Sabha member, passed away on January 8, 2025, at the age of 73. He succumbed to cardiac arrest at his South Mumbai residence, with his last rites performed the same evening.

Early Life and Literary Achievements

Born on January 15, 1951, in Bhagalpur, Bihar, Nandy was a prolific poet and author, penning over 40 poetry collections in English. He also translated works from Bengali, Urdu, and Punjabi into English. His poem “Calcutta If You Must Exile Me” is celebrated as a landmark in modern Indian literature.

Trailblazing Journalism Career

During the 1980s, Nandy made a significant mark in Indian journalism. He served as Publishing Director of The Times of India Group and helmed prominent publications like The Illustrated Weekly of India, The Independent, and Filmfare. His bold and innovative approach earned him widespread recognition and admiration.

Filmmaking and Media Contributions

In 1993, Nandy founded Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC), a media company behind acclaimed films such as Sur, Kaante, Jhankaar Beats, Chameli, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, and Pyaar Ke Side Effects. PNC also ventured into television and digital content, producing the celebrated series Four More Shots Please!, which received an International Emmy nomination in 2020.

Political and Social Advocacy

Nandy represented Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, elected on a Shiv Sena ticket. He was also a passionate animal rights advocate and the founder of People for Animals, India’s pioneering animal rights NGO.

Tributes and Legacy

The news of Nandy’s passing has prompted heartfelt tributes from across the nation. Actor Anupam Kher mourned his loss, describing him as a “fearless and unique journalist” and a “pillar of support” during Kher’s early days in Mumbai.
