Musical Maestro Pyarelal Sharma Awarded with Prestigious Lakshminarayana Award

Pyarelal Sharma, the legendary music composer of the Hindi film duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, has been awarded the Lakshminarayana International Award for his contributions over five decades. Sharma, who partnered with Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar, composed some of Bollywood's most diverse melodies from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Veteran music composer Pyarelal Sharma of the iconic Hindi film duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal has been bestowed the high-profile Lakshminarayana International Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions spanning over five decades.

The award was presented at a special ceremony during the 2024 Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival, held annually to commemorate the work of violin virtuoso Lakshminarayana. Renowned artists L Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurthy Subramaniam congratulated Pyarelal Ji through the award citation.

A Legendary Musical Journey

Pyarelal Sharma’s laurels as part of Laxmikant-Pyarelal resonate far and wide. In partnership with the late Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar, Pyarelal Ji sculpted some of Bollywood’s most enduring and diverse melodies from the 1960s through the 1990s.

Scored for everything from soul-stirring tragedy in “Bobby” to the irresistible frenzy of “Om Shanti Om,” their discography stands testimony to the sheer range and creativity embodied in their partnership. Alongside composing evergreen soundtracks for all-time-great films like “Mera Gaon Mera Desh,” “Amar Akbar Anthony” and “Prem Rog,” Laxmikant-Pyarelal also conducted orchestration and background music to lift the narrative. With their unique East-meets-West fusion sound, the duo brought classical Hindustani sensibilities to popular Hindi film music. The variety of moods, genres, and styles reflected in their remarkable 500+ movie scores continues charming new generations of listeners.

As the surviving member still actively involved in live performances and mentoring aspiring talent, Pyarelal Ji keeps the Laxmikant-Pyarelal legacy thriving.

The Making of a Musical Prodigy

Hailing from the culturally rich town of Rohtak, Haryana, the arts captivated Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma from childhood. His early talent in percussion and mastery over instruments like the tabla won acclaim and opportunity. After initial work arranging background scores for films like “Dosti,” his first major break as a composer alongside Laxmikant arrived with the runaway success of “Milan” in 1967.

This kicked off a glorious three-decade stint with some of Hindi cinema’s most revered names. The dynamism and sheer output of Laxmikant-Pyarelal during this golden period earned industry renown and countless fans for life. With accolades like the National Award for Best Music Director and platinum disc sales, the duo became synonymous with musical excellence. Even today, radio stations and playlists play their ever-energetic melodies on loop.

Carrying the Torch Forward with Grace

Although Laxmikant’s demise in 1998 dissolved their on-screen partnership, Pyarelal continues gracing public platforms with the duo’s soulful evergreens. His recent production collaborations and motivational talks inspire emerging creative talent.

Receiving the high-regard Lakshminarayana Award now is an apt culmination of Pyarelal Ji’s dedication to his craft. As an icon who raised Bollywood music’s ambit to global heights, his imprint on India’s pop culture repertoire reigns supreme even today.

Just like the legendary Lakshminarayana immortalized himself through his violin, the musical works of Pyarelal Sharma stand immortal testaments as well. This award comes as a token of his instrument having woven unforgettable tapestries of sound into the public consciousness. It also further validates Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s pioneer status in shaping the distinctive melodic formats that Indian popular music is renowned for internationally.

As Pyarelal Ji continues passing the torch through teaching and festivals recognizing transcendent talent, his perspectives enlighten budding artists. The business too finds his insights invaluable in this fast-morphing creative landscape. Though his partner Laxmikant Ji departed physically, together their vibrant oeuvre ensures their music always plays on - perfectly in sync and harmony across our collective memory. Just as past luminaries Lakshminarayana and Laxmikant-Pyarelal made history, today Pyarelal Sharma himself steps into legend through this award.
