Professor Urbasi Sinha, a distinguished faculty member at the Raman Research Institute (RRI) in the Light and Matter Physics theme, has been awarded the prestigious Gates-Cambridge Impact Prize 2025 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Cambridge, UK.

Groundbreaking Contributions to Quantum Science

As the head of the Quantum Information and Computing (QuIC) lab at RRI, Professor Sinha has led her team to significant advancements in quantum communication, computing, and optics. Her lab was among the first in India to develop and utilize heralded and entangled photon sources for various applications, marking a milestone in the country’s quantum research.

Leadership in National Quantum Initiatives

Professor Sinha is a key figure in India’s ‘National Quantum Mission,’ a project designed to position the country at the forefront of global quantum innovation. Her leadership has been crucial in promoting research and development in quantum technologies, aligning with national goals to boost technological competitiveness.

Global Recognition and Collaborations

Internationally, Professor Sinha has earned recognition for her contributions. She was awarded the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Photonic Quantum Science and Technologies at the University of Calgary. She has also been a driving force behind the establishment of the Open Quantum Institute (OQI), a groundbreaking multi-stakeholder organization launched at CERN in March 2024.

The Gates-Cambridge Impact Prize nomination praised Professor Sinha’s vision and commitment, noting that she is "paving the way for a future where quantum computing will be a key tool in addressing humanity’s most pressing challenges, embodying the essence of science dedicated to global progress."
