Adi Sanskriti for Tribal Heritage

On September 10, 2025, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs took a landmark step to merge tradition with technology by launching the Beta Version of Adi Sanskriti at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. This event coincided with the National Conference on Adi Karmayogi Abhiyan.

Envisioned as the world’s first digital tribal university, Adi Sanskriti is a revolutionary digital platform that not only safeguards tribal traditions but also supports livelihoods by connecting artisans with global markets. This initiative is an example of how India is embracing technology to preserve its rich cultural heritage.

Three Pillars of Adi Sanskriti

The Adi Sanskriti digital platform operates through three main components that integrate learning, preservation, and livelihood:

1. Adi Vishwavidyalaya (Digital Tribal Art Academy)

  • The Adi Vishwavidyalaya courses offer 45 immersive programs covering tribal dance, music, painting, crafts, and folklore.

  • These courses are designed to help learners worldwide explore tribal culture digitally.

  • Students can gain knowledge on tribal dance and music learning, traditional crafts, and folklore, making it a comprehensive online learning platform for tribal art preservation in India.

2. Adi Sampada (Socio-Cultural Repository)

  • Adi Sampada hosts more than 5,000 curated documents across five main themes: dance, painting, textiles, artifacts, and livelihoods.

  • This digital archive plays a crucial role in safeguarding India’s tribal heritage while offering researchers and students access to authentic resources.

  • The repository ensures that every tribal art form, from regional dances to folk crafts, is documented and preserved for future generations.

3. Adi Haat (Online Marketplace)

  • The Adi Haat e-marketplace allows tribal artisans to sell their products directly to consumers, promoting sustainable incomes.

  • Initially linked with TRIFED, it will eventually grow into a dedicated online marketplace for tribal crafts.

  • Through this digital platform for promoting tribal livelihoods, artisans can reach a global audience, bridging the gap between tradition and commerce.

Partnership with Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs)

To ensure authenticity and grassroots participation, Adi Sanskriti collaborates with State Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs). In its first phase, 15 states—including Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh—have contributed to the documentation and digital mapping of tribal artforms. This collaboration with TRIs ensures that Adi Sanskriti is a true representation of India’s cultural diversity.
