AI Mosquito Control System in Andhra Pradesh

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has launched a cutting-edge initiative called the AI Mosquito Control System, officially known as the Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS). This intelligent and data-driven program aims to combat mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria, especially during the monsoon season.

This development is highly relevant for SSC aspirants as it involves topics like science and technology, public health, state initiatives, and smart governance. Below is a detailed overview of the initiative tailored for exam preparation and general awareness.

What is the AI Mosquito Control System?

The AI Mosquito Control System is an innovative public health project that leverages artificial intelligence, drones, IoT devices, and real-time data to monitor and control mosquito populations.

Officially launched under the name Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS), the system marks a shift from traditional mosquito fogging to AI-based mosquito surveillance.

The AI mosquito control system uses smart sensors to collect data on mosquito presence, breeding hotspots, temperature, humidity, and mosquito species. This data enables targeted larvicide spraying, avoiding unnecessary and random spraying across cities.

Why Was the AI Mosquito Control System Launched?

Every year, thousands of people across Andhra Pradesh suffer from diseases like dengue and malaria. In 2024 alone, more than 5,500 dengue cases were reported from six major urban centers.

The traditional mosquito control system lacked precision and wasted resources. The new AI mosquito control system aims to:

  • Identify mosquito-prone areas quickly

  • Enable faster and smarter responses

  • Reduce disease spread using real-time data

  • Minimize chemical usage through drone-based spraying

  • Promote AI-driven public health strategies

Where Will the AI Mosquito Control System Be Implemented?

The pilot phase of this project is being conducted in 66 areas across the following six major cities:

  • Vijayawada – 28 places

  • Visakhapatnam – 16 places

  • Nellore – 7 places

  • Kurnool – 6 places

  • Rajamahendravaram – 5 places

  • Kakinada – 4 places

These locations were chosen due to their high vulnerability to mosquito breeding and increasing disease cases.

How Does the AI Mosquito Control System Work?

The AI mosquito control system works through a combination of technologies that allow for smart, efficient, and responsive action:

1. AI-Powered Surveillance

  • Smart mosquito sensors and IoT mosquito detection devices gather environmental and biological data such as humidity, temperature, and species types.

2. Drone-Based Mosquito Spraying

  • Drones are used for targeted fogging and larvicide spraying. This ensures minimal chemical exposure and precise coverage in identified mosquito zones.

3. Real-Time Disease Mapping

  • Hospitals send daily updates on disease cases. The AI mosquito control system uses this information to create hotspot maps for dengue and malaria.

4. Public Participation via Mobile Apps

  • People can report mosquito-related problems through apps like Vector Control and Puramitra, which help authorities respond faster.

5. Central Dashboard Monitoring

  • A central control dashboard tracks all field activities, sensor reports, spraying actions, and case data in real time.

Benefits of the AI Mosquito Control System

The AI mosquito control system represents a significant advancement in urban public health management. Key benefits include:

  • Rapid detection and response to mosquito outbreaks

  • Efficient use of chemicals and resources

  • Reduced disease incidence through early action

  • Smart data-driven planning

  • Empowered local communities through participation

  • Contribution to AI in public health in India

This system also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting good health and well-being.

Role of MAUD and Special Agencies

The project is managed by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department. Execution is being handed over to special agencies that will be paid based on performance.

Their efficiency in using the AI mosquito control system to reduce mosquito populations and disease cases will determine their incentives.

Importance of SSC and Other Exams

This project is important for the following topics in competitive exams:

  • Current Affairs – State-level initiatives and government schemes

  • Science & Technology – Use of AI in healthcare

  • Environment & Ecology – Disease control and sustainable practices

  • General Awareness – Health and sanitation in urban planning

Final Thoughts

The AI mosquito control system is a path-breaking initiative by the Andhra Pradesh government that shows how artificial intelligence and smart city tools can be integrated into public health. With its use of AI mosquito tracking, drone fogging, and IoT-enabled mosquito detection, the system could become a national model for disease control.

This initiative not only strengthens India’s AI-driven public health infrastructure but also provides SSC aspirants with an excellent example of technology-driven governance.
