Armed Forces Veterans’ Day 2025: Saluting the Courageous Heroes

Armed Forces Veterans’ Day is observed annually on January 14 in India, honoring the unwavering dedication and sacrifices of military veterans while expressing solidarity with the families of the courageous individuals who served the nation.

Armed Forces Veterans’ Day is observed annually on January 14 across India, dedicated to honoring the selfless service and sacrifices of military veterans and fostering solidarity with the families of those who served the nation. The day also strengthens the bond between veterans and active personnel while addressing their welfare and concerns.

Origins of Armed Forces Veterans’ Day in India
The Ministry of Defence initiated the celebration of Armed Forces Veterans’ Day on January 14, 2017, as a nationwide event. This day recognizes the contributions of veterans from the Army, Navy, and Air Force and serves as a platform to address issues related to their pensions, resettlement, and overall welfare. It also ensures their legacy is honored and remembered.

Why January 14?
The date holds historical importance as it marks the retirement of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa on January 14, 1953. Field Marshal Cariappa, the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, succeeded General Sir F.R.R. Bucher, the last British officer in the role. After retiring, Field Marshal Cariappa actively contributed to public service and was instrumental in establishing the Directorate General Resettlement (DGR), which focuses on the resettlement and welfare of retired armed forces personnel.

Notably, January 15 is celebrated as Army Day, commemorating the day in 1949 when Field Marshal Cariappa took command of the Indian Army, symbolizing India’s military independence.

Global Practices Honoring Veterans
Countries worldwide have designated days to honor their military veterans, celebrating their service and sacrifices.

Veterans’ Day in the United States
In the U.S., Veterans’ Day is observed on November 11, coinciding with Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other nations. This date marks the end of World War I in 1918, with the signing of the armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It honors the service of military veterans and commemorates fallen soldiers.
