Tthe vibrant hill state of Mizoram in northeastern India celebrates its Foundation Day with fervent zeal and admiration, commemorating its inception as the 23rd state of the Republic of India in 1987. Historical Significance of Statehood for Mizoram
The Mizo history stands distinctly defined by foreign domination and a protracted emancipation struggle. The radical 'Mautam Famine' of 1959 fanned the flames of independence, culminating in the formation of the Mizo National Famine Front that later evolved into a full-fledged resistance force called Mizo National Front (MNF) under the leadership of the charismatic Laldenga in 1961.
What ensued was a 20-year long bloody insurgency and armed revolt against the Indian state marked by violence, loss and human sufferings. Finally wisdom dawned, negotiations began and the historic Mizo Peace Accord was signed in 1986 granting statehood and autonomy to Mizos. The official inauguration of Mizoram state occurred the very next year on February 20, 1987 amidst celebrations across the hill state.

Nestled in the northeastern Himalayas, the picturesque state of Arunachal Pradesh commemorates its 37th Foundation Day on February 20, 2024. This day marks the historic milestone when Arunachal Pradesh formally attained statehood within the Republic of India back in 1987.
Historical Background Behind Statehood for Arunachal Pradesh
Modern-day Arunachal Pradesh traces its origins back to the medieval kingdom of Monpa that encompassed the Tawang region. It later came under the control of Tibet. During the British rule, this strategically located Himalayan tract was loosely administered under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act of 1873 as the North-East Frontier Tracts.
Post independence, NEFA (North East Frontier Agency) was constituted in 1954 and administered by the Ministry of External Affairs owing to uncertainty over the China border. On 20th January 1972, NEFA was renamed as ‘Arunachal Pradesh’ and made a Union Territory under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Finally, after sustained efforts by local leaders and owing to security compulsions in the wake of the 1962 Indo-China war, Arunachal Pradesh achieved statehood on 20 February 1987 vide the State of Arunachal Pradesh Act, 1986 with 56 members in its first Legislative Assembly.
