CCPA Launches Investigation into Ola and Uber for Alleged Differential Pricing Practices

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has sent notices to Ola and Uber over allegations of charging varying fares based on users' mobile devices, with complaints pointing to price differences between iPhone and Android users. Ola has denied the claims, and Apple is also under investigation.

CCPA Probes Ola, Uber for Differential Pricing

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued notices to ride-hailing companies Ola and Uber, investigating allegations of differential pricing based on users' mobile operating systems. Reports have surfaced suggesting that iPhone users are charged higher fares for the same rides compared to Android users. Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, has directed the CCPA to probe these claims, stressing the importance of safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring fair business practices.

Ola and Uber Respond to CCPA Notices

Both Ola and Uber have denied the allegations in response to the CCPA's inquiry. Ola clarified, "We have a uniform pricing structure for all customers and do not differentiate based on the operating system of the user’s phone for identical rides." Similarly, Uber stated, "We do not adjust prices based on a rider’s phone manufacturer." Both companies have expressed willingness to cooperate with the CCPA to clarify misunderstandings.

Apple Under Investigation for iOS Performance Issues

In addition to the ride-hailing companies, the CCPA has issued a notice to Apple Inc. regarding reported performance issues with iPhones following the iOS 18+ update. Consumers have complained about battery drain, device overheating during charging, and problems with features like CarPlay and Safari. The CCPA is seeking a response from Apple to address these concerns and ensure consumer protection.

Key Highlights
