India Launches UG Minor in Quantum Technologies

India is set to introduce its first-ever Undergraduate (UG) Minor Programme in Quantum Technologies, which will begin from the next academic session. The program is a joint effort by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Quantum Mission (NQM), aimed at giving engineering students the chance to learn about cutting-edge quantum fields like quantum computing, quantum cryptography, and quantum mechanics

This initiative is designed to equip students with the skills needed to be part of the growing global field of quantum technologies, aligning with India’s vision to lead in quantum science and technology. The program will be available to engineering students starting from their third semester, offering a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical learning.

Program Overview:

The new UG Minor Programme will offer engineering students a chance to specialize in quantum technologies. It will cover subjects such as:

  • Quantum Mechanics
  • Quantum Computing
  • Quantum Cryptography
  • Quantum Algorithms

This program is set to make India a strong player in global quantum research, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-performance computing. The initiative will also help students gain knowledge that is highly relevant to modern industries, increasing their employability and innovation potential.

Curriculum Structure and Flexibility:

The UG Minor Programme will offer 18 credits, with students having the flexibility to choose from over 30 courses. This gives students the freedom to select subjects that best match their interests and their institution’s resources. Some key areas of study include:

The curriculum has been designed with input from top institutes like IITs, IIITs, and NITs, ensuring that the courses meet global standards and industry needs.

Hands-on Learning and Faculty Development:

A major focus of the program is on practical, hands-on learning. Students will have the chance to work on real projects and use quantum simulators and quantum software, helping them apply what they learn in real-world scenarios.

In addition, AICTE will establish advanced quantum laboratories to support research and development in quantum technologies. The program will also include Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) to train teachers in quantum technology, ensuring that students get high-quality education and guidance.

Infrastructure and National Vision:

This program is a key part of the National Quantum Mission (NQM), which focuses on building the necessary infrastructure for quantum research in India. As part of this initiative, efforts will be made to improve academic-industry links, helping students develop practical skills that can be applied in the job market.

By fostering talent in quantum technologies, the program aims to boost India’s innovation and research capabilities. It is also designed to strengthen India’s position in the global quantum race, helping the country become a leader in this emerging field.

Credits and Courses: Students can select 18 credits from over 30 courses.

Hands-on Learning: Includes practical exposure to quantum simulators and project-based learning.

Infrastructure Development: Advanced quantum laboratories to be established for practical and research purposes.

Faculty Training:  Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) to train educators in quantum technology.

National Quantum Mission: A government initiative focusing on advancing quantum technologies in areas like cybersecurity, AI, and high-performance computing.
