India's iSNR: Establishing Global Standards in Sustainable Rubber Production

India has introduced the Indian Sustainable Natural Rubber (iSNR) initiative to establish international standards for sustainable rubber production. The framework emphasizes zero deforestation, empowering farmers with free certification, adhering to EU regulations, and ensuring supply chain traceability.

India Launches Indian Sustainable Natural Rubber (iSNR) Initiative in Kerala

On January 21, 2025, India launched the Indian Sustainable Natural Rubber (iSNR) initiative in Kottayam, Kerala, with the aim of setting new global standards in sustainable rubber production. The event was attended by George Kurian, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Minority Affairs, and presided over by Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan, Member of the Legislative Assembly. Other notable attendees included G. Anil Kumar, Vice Chairman of the Rubber Board, and N. Hari, Member of the Rubber Board.

Key Objectives of the iSNR Initiative

  • Zero-Cost Certification for Farmers: The iSNR framework provides free certification to farmers and growers, removing financial barriers for smallholders.
  • Compliance with Global Regulations: By aligning with the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the initiative ensures that Indian natural rubber meets global sustainability standards, boosting its competitiveness in international markets.

Strategic Focus Areas

  • Deforestation Prevention: The iSNR framework requires zero deforestation commitments, supporting global biodiversity and efforts in carbon sequestration.
  • Farmer Empowerment: Through free certification and training, the initiative helps smallholders adopt sustainable farming practices that improve yields, reduce environmental impact, and enhance livelihoods.
  • Supply Chain Traceability: The framework promotes transparency from farm to factory, assuring global buyers of ethical and sustainable sourcing.

Technological Integration with TRST01

TRST01, chosen as the official technology partner after a thorough evaluation, contributes advanced digital solutions to the iSNR initiative. Their platform provides:

  • Digital Monitoring and Reporting: Ensuring compliance with EUDR requirements and offering real-time data on sustainable practices.
  • Simplified Compliance Processes: Streamlining certification processes to ease the burden on farmers and exporters.

India’s Commitment to Sustainable Development

The iSNR initiative is in line with India’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement, underscoring the country's dedication to advancing environmental sustainability and responsible agricultural practices.
