India’s Semiconductor Industry

India’s Semiconductor Industry is witnessing a transformative phase, marked by rapid advancements in chip manufacturing, technology, and international collaboration. The sector took a significant leap forward with the inauguration of Semicon India 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd September at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi.

This three-day event, from September 2nd to 4th, attracted over 20,750 participants, including 2,500 delegates from 48 countries, highlighting India’s growing role in semiconductor manufacturing and its global technology leadership.

Overview of Semicon India 2025

Semicon India 2025 aims to catalyse a robust and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem. The event focused on multiple aspects of India’s Semiconductor Industry, including semiconductor fabrication plants in India, advanced packaging, smart manufacturing, artificial intelligence, research and development, and investment opportunities. A key emphasis was placed on semiconductor policy and incentives, international cooperation, and state-level policy implementation to strengthen the sector.

The conference also highlighted the future of semiconductor manufacturing technology in India, showcasing innovations in semiconductor technology in India and electronics manufacturing in India.

Dedicated spaces for startups, workforce development, and innovation further reinforced India’s Semiconductor Industry’s commitment to becoming a global semiconductor hub.

Prime Minister’s Vision

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event and participated in the CEOs roundtable on 3rd September. His vision is to position India as a global leader in chip manufacturing, semiconductor plants, and design innovation.

The conference marked the ‘Perform’ phase of the national initiative, following the earlier ‘Reform’ and ‘Transform’ phases, emphasizing the implementation of semiconductor manufacturing in India and scaling projects nationwide, further boosting India’s Semiconductor Industry.

Key Projects and Infrastructure Development

Recent developments in India’s Semiconductor Industry include the sanctioning of four new facilities focusing on packaging, silicon carbide, discrete semiconductors, and 3D glass technology.

  • The Micron facility, approved in 2023, is nearing completion. Major semiconductor fabrication plants in India are underway in Gujarat (Dholera and Sanand) and Assam (Jagi Road).

  • These developments are supported by semiconductor workforce training programs in India and logistics infrastructure to ensure smooth operations.

  • The event also emphasized upcoming semiconductor fabrication plants in India by 2025 and their potential to boost the domestic and global semiconductor supply chain in India.

Policy and Incentives

To accelerate growth, the Indian government has implemented schemes such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) and Design Linked Incentive (DLI).

  • The PLI scheme is crucial for expanding the MSME base by creating upstream and downstream value chains in semiconductor manufacturing in India.

  • The DLI scheme fosters innovation and design capabilities, supporting semiconductor startups in India and the creation of intellectual property.

  • The government’s focus on government policies for the semiconductor industry in India aims to encourage private sector participation, semiconductor investment opportunities in India, and international partnerships.

  • These incentives ensure India’s competitive edge in semiconductor research and development India and strengthen India’s Semiconductor Industry on the global map.

International Participation and Collaboration

  • Semicon India 2025 hosted six country roundtable discussions and featured country pavilions. Over 50 global technology leaders shared insights on how India is becoming a global semiconductor hub.

  • The event underlined the importance of international collaboration in India’s semiconductor sector to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain, innovation, and workforce development.

Growth of Semicon India Conferences

Since its launch in 2022, Semicon India has emerged as a flagship platform for semiconductor India advancement. Previous editions were held in Bengaluru (2022), Gandhinagar (2023), and Greater Noida (2024).

The conferences consistently showcase technological progress, semiconductor policy and incentives in India, and the potential of semiconductor manufacturing in India, attracting both domestic and global attention and reinforcing India’s Semiconductor Industry’s significance.

Final Thoughts

India’s Semiconductor Industry is emerging as a global powerhouse, driven by strategic government initiatives, advanced technology adoption, and international collaboration. The launch of Semicon India 2025 highlights the country’s commitment to becoming a global hub for semiconductor design and manufacturing. With state-of-the-art fabrication plants, robust semiconductor research and development, and innovative semiconductor technology in India, the sector is poised for exponential growth.

The implementation of schemes like PLI and DLI ensures sustainable development and encourages domestic startups and private investments. Ongoing infrastructure projects, workforce training, and policy support strengthen India’s Semiconductor Industry’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.

As India continues to attract international collaboration and expand semiconductor manufacturing in India, the future looks promising, with opportunities for innovation, technology leadership, and economic growth.
