Lokpal of India Celebrates Its First Foundation Day

On January 16, 2025, the Lokpal of India marked its first Foundation Day commemorating 11 years since its inception under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013. The event held in New Delhi was attended by dignitaries including Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and former Lokayukta Justice N. Santosh Hegde.

On January 16, 2025, the Lokpal of India marked its inaugural Foundation Day at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, commemorating 11 years since its creation under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, on January 16, 2014.

Dignitaries Present
The event was attended by Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who was the Chief Guest. Other distinguished attendees included:

  • Justice N. Santosh Hegde, former Supreme Court Judge and ex-Lokayukta of Karnataka
  • Padma Bhushan awardee Anna Hazare (participating virtually)
  • Attorney General of India, R. Venkataramani
  • Judges from the Supreme Court and various High Courts
  • Lokayuktas from different states
  • Representatives from the Bar Council of India and other legal bodies
  • Officials from organizations like the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and Central Vigilance Commission (CVC)
     

Chairperson’s Address
Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, Chairperson of the Lokpal, discussed the institution's origins, rooted in a powerful civil society movement advocating for an ombudsman to combat corruption. He emphasized the need for the Lokpal to evolve in response to changing corruption dynamics and outlined steps to improve its effectiveness, including:

  • Streamlining the complaint registration process
  • Using advanced technologies and artificial intelligence for data management
  • Hiring experts in forensic accounting and cyber investigations
  • Strengthening collaborations with agencies such as the CBI, CVC, and the judiciary
     

Chief Justice’s Remarks
Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna highlighted the Lokpal's critical role in ensuring government accountability and transparency, essential for upholding democratic values. He stressed that public trust is key to democracy, and institutions like the Lokpal are vital in addressing corruption. He also emphasized the importance of the Lokpal’s independence, impartiality, and performance in maintaining public confidence.
