Dwivedi has held numerous prestigious positions, including Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Northern Army Commander, Director General of Infantry, and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of various corps and formations.

Lt. Gen. Upendra Dwivedi: Early Life and Education

Born on July 1, 1964, Lt. Gen. Dwivedi hails from a family with a rich military tradition. He received his early education at the renowned Sainik School in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, where he was nurtured in the values of discipline, leadership, and service to the nation. His academic pursuits continued with his enrollment at the National Defence College, the US Army War College, and the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington.

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi's academic credentials are further bolstered by his M.Phil. in Defence and Management Studies and two Master's degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science. His exceptional performance earned him the coveted 'Distinguished Fellow' recognition during the NDC equivalent course at the US Army War College in Carlisle.

Command and Leadership Roles

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi's journey in the Indian Army began on December 15, 1984, when he was commissioned into the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles, an infantry regiment renowned for its valour and operational expertise. Over the course of his illustrious career, he has held a wide array of command and leadership roles, including Command of Regiment (18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles), Brigade (26 Sector Assam Rifles), Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Assam Rifles (East), and 9 Corps.

His tenure as the Northern Army Commander from 2022 to 2024 was particularly notable, as he provided strategic guidance and operational oversight for planning and executing sustained operations along the northern and western borders, while also orchestrating dynamic counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Operational Experience and Decorations

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi's operational experience is extensive, having commanded his unit in the Kashmir Valley and the Rajasthan sector. He has also served as a Sector Commander and Inspector General (IG) of Assam Rifles in the North East sector, gaining invaluable experience in counter-insurgency and border management operations.

His distinguished service has been recognized with numerous awards and decorations, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards, attesting to his exceptional leadership, bravery, and commitment to the nation.
