Visakhapatnam to Become a Green Hydrogen Hub

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the foundation of India’s first Green Hydrogen Hub in Visakhapatnam, a project expected to draw investments worth ₹1.85 lakh crore. The hub will feature a 20 GW renewable energy capacity and generate 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen per day.

On January 8, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, located in Anakapalle district near Visakhapatnam. This milestone underscores India’s commitment to sustainable energy and establishes Visakhapatnam as a pivotal player in the global green hydrogen market.

Project Overview
The Visakhapatnam Green Hydrogen Hub is a collaborative effort between NGEL and the New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP). As the first Green Hydrogen Hub under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, this initiative highlights India’s focus on advancing clean energy solutions.

Investment and Capacity
The project is poised to attract an investment of around ₹1.85 lakh crore. It will incorporate 20 GW of renewable energy capacity and is designed to produce 1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) of green hydrogen. Additionally, the hub will generate 7,500 TPD of green hydrogen derivatives, including green methanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel, with a primary focus on export markets.

Strategic Importance
Visakhapatnam’s coastal location and well-developed port infrastructure make it an ideal choice for this hub. The facility will leverage advanced electrolysis technology powered exclusively by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. This initiative aims to revolutionize India’s industrial and transportation sectors by offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.

Economic and Environmental Impact
The project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, boosting regional economic development. It is also projected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to India’s commitments under the Paris Agreement to combat climate change.

Future Prospects
As a cornerstone of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, this project aims to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. It seeks to enhance energy self-reliance, reduce import dependence, and position India as a global leader in the production and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
