Who is recognized as the Father of Email? Discover the name.

Raymond Samuel Tomlinson, an American computer programmer, is known as the Father of Email. In 1971, he developed the first email system on ARPANET, the precursor to the internet. He also pioneered the use of the "@" symbol to distinguish between usernames and computer names in email addresses.

Email stands as one of the most vital communication tools in today’s world, enabling quick and efficient exchanges between individuals and businesses globally. But have you ever wondered where it all began or who conceived the idea of email? The story behind the creation of email is both fascinating and inspiring. Let’s dive into its origin and the visionary behind it.

Father of Email
Raymond Samuel Tomlinson, an American computer programmer, is widely recognized as the Father of Email. In 1971, he developed the first email system on ARPANET, an early version of the internet. Tomlinson is credited with introducing the "@" symbol to separate usernames and computer names in email addresses, forever transforming global communication.

Early Life and Education of Raymond Samuel Tomlinson
Born on April 23, 1941, in Amsterdam, New York, Raymond Tomlinson grew up in Vail Mills, New York. He attended Broadalbin Central School and developed a passion for technology early on.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1963, followed by a master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1965. At MIT, Tomlinson worked on advanced engineering projects, including a speech synthesizer.

The Invention of Email
In 1967, Tomlinson began working at Bolt, Beranek, and Newman (BBN Technologies). While working on ARPANET, a precursor to the internet, he developed the world’s first email system in 1971.

Tomlinson adapted an existing program called SNDMSG, which allowed messages to be sent within a single computer, and combined it with a program he created, CPYNET, enabling users to send messages across different computers connected to ARPANET.

To distinguish email addresses, he introduced the “@” symbol to separate the username from the computer name—a practice that has remained unchanged to this day.

The First Message
The first email Tomlinson sent was a test message, which he later described as insignificant. It was likely a random string of letters like “QWERTYUIOP.” At the time, he viewed email as a fun experiment, not realizing its future significance.

Challenges and Early Reception
Initially, Tomlinson’s employer did not see email as a priority. It was simply something he worked on out of curiosity. He even humorously warned a colleague, "Don’t tell anyone! This isn’t what we are supposed to be working on."

Legacy and Impact
Tomlinson’s creation of email revolutionized communication. The Internet Hall of Fame called it a “complete revolution” in the way people connect. Today, email is used by billions for both personal and professional exchanges.

Awards and Recognition for Ray Tomlinson
Ray Tomlinson received numerous honors, including:

  • The George R. Stibitz Computer Pioneer Award in 2000.
  • A Webby Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2001.
  • Induction into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2002.
  • In 2022, April 23, his birthday, was declared Email Day, a holiday celebrating his monumental contribution to communication technology.

Death and Remembering a Pioneer
Raymond Tomlinson passed away on March 5, 2016, at the age of 74 due to a heart attack. While he may no longer be with us, his invention continues to connect the world every day.
