GAIL India Ltd. Unveiling India's First Green Hydrogen Plant

GAIL (India) Limited has completed the commissioning of its first green hydrogen plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh. The facility, which uses 10 Megawatt PEM Electrolyzer units, can produce 4.3 Tons Per Day of hydrogen.

Commissioning of the First Green Hydrogen Plant

GAIL (India) Limited, the nation's leading natural gas transmission and distribution company, has achieved a significant milestone with the commissioning of its first green hydrogen plant. This groundbreaking facility, located in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, marks GAIL's foray into the realm of new and alternative energy sources, paving the way for a sustainable energy future.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, signifying the government's recognition and support for this pioneering initiative. This endorsement highlights the national commitment to embracing renewable energy technologies and aligns with the broader goals of the National Hydrogen Mission.

Technical Specifications and Operational Details

Plant Capacity and Production Process

The Vijaipur green hydrogen plant boasts an impressive capacity to produce 4.3 Tons Per Day (TPD) of hydrogen. This is achieved through the utilization of 10 Megawatt (MW) PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) Electrolyzer units, which employ the process of electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy sources. The plant's state-of-the-art technology ensures a hydrogen purity of 99.999% at a pressure of 30 Kg/cm².

Renewable Power Integration and Solar Infrastructure

To meet the green power requirements of the 10 MW PEM Electrolyzer, GAIL is actively integrating renewable energy sources into its operations. This includes the installation of approximately 20 MW of solar power plants at Vijaipur, comprising both ground-mounted and floating solar units. Additionally, GAIL is tapping into renewable power through open access, further enhancing its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Initial Applications and Future Prospects

In the initial phase, the hydrogen generated by the Vijaipur facility will serve as a fuel alongside natural gas for internal consumption within various processes and equipment at the existing Vijaipur plant. This strategic approach allows GAIL to integrate green hydrogen into its operations while exploring its potential for future applications.

Looking ahead, GAIL has ambitious plans to expand the reach of green hydrogen. The company envisions dispensing hydrogen to retail customers in nearby areas, transported through high-pressure cascades. Furthermore, GAIL is engaging in collaborative studies with Engineers India Limited and IIT Kanpur to explore the possibilities of blending hydrogen with natural gas, paving the way for sustainable energy solutions in the future.

Aligning with National Goals and Environmental Sustainability

National Hydrogen Mission and Energy Self-Sufficiency

GAIL's green hydrogen initiative aligns with the broader goals of the National Hydrogen Mission, which aims to develop a green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) annually in the country by 2030. This ambitious target underscores India's commitment to achieving energy self-sufficiency and reducing its carbon footprint.

Environmental Sustainability and Innovation

By commissioning India's first green hydrogen plant, GAIL has taken a significant step towards embracing renewable energy and reducing its carbon footprint. This pioneering initiative not only aligns with the nation's environmental sustainability goals but also demonstrates GAIL's commitment to innovation and its role as a responsible corporate citizen in the energy sector.

With the unveiling of its first green hydrogen plant, GAIL (India) Limited has embarked on a transformative journey towards a sustainable energy future. This trailblazing initiative not only showcases the company's technological prowess but also underscores India's dedication to achieving energy self-sufficiency and reducing its environmental impact. By integrating renewable energy sources, collaborating with academic institutions, and exploring innovative applications, GAIL is paving the way for a greener and more sustainable energy landscape in India.
