Goyal Announces India’s Goal of 10,000 GI Tags by 2030

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, unveiled an ambitious target of securing 10,000 Geographical Indication (GI) Tags by 2030. He made this announcement at the GI Samagam event in New Delhi, organized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT)

Piyush Goyal Targets 10,000 GI Tags by 2030

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, set an ambitious target of achieving 10,000 Geographical Indication (GI) Tags by 2030. He made this announcement during the GI Samagam event in New Delhi, organized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in partnership with the India Today Group.

The minister emphasized a comprehensive, government-wide strategy to reach this goal, which will include the creation of a dedicated committee to manage its implementation. Currently, India has issued 605 GI tags.

Shri Goyal highlighted the government's efforts under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to strengthen India's Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) ecosystem, citing initiatives like One District One Product (ODOP) and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation Fund.

He stressed the importance of balancing “Development with Heritage” (Vikas bhi aur Virasat bhi), emphasizing the economic and cultural value of promoting and protecting GI-tagged products.

  • E-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart.

  • Recognition of efforts by Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra in promoting GI-tagged products.

Process Improvements

  • Increased manpower in the department handling GI tagging.
  • The GI tagging process has been fully digitalized, making it more efficient and time-bound.

Potential Export Opportunities

  • GI products will be marketed through railways, airports, and global platforms.
  • Collaboration with both private and government organizations to unlock export potential for Indian GI products.
