IIT Dharwad developed a Fire Rescue Assistant Drone

A team of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad has developed a fire rescue assistant drone, a significant advancement in fire safety and emergency response capabilities.

In a remarkable feat of engineering and innovation, a team of teachers and students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad, led by Sudheer Siddapureddy and Ameer Mulla, has developed a fire rescue assistant drone. This groundbreaking technology represents a significant advancement in fire safety and emergency response capabilities.

The unveiling and demonstration of the fire rescue assistant drone took place during the two-day workshop on Drone Design and Autonomous Navigation in Fire Rescue (DDANFR 2024), held at IIT Dharwad on May 31 and June 1. The event was organized by the Fire and Thermal Research Laboratory (FTRL) and the Control Systems and Robotics Laboratory, with funding from the TiHAN Foundation, IIT Hyderabad (NMICPS, Government of India).

Designed to navigate through confined indoor spaces and withstand extreme temperatures, the fire rescue assistant drone addresses a critical challenge in firefighting operations. Elaborating on the design process, Prof. Siddapureddy, the faculty in-charge at FTRL, highlighted the difficulties in creating a compact yet resilient drone capable of operating in high-temperature environments.

The FTRL's contributions to the fire research community have been significant, including the identification of sensors that can function in sooty environments and the development of flexible protective shields for the drone after numerous fire experiments. The research team continues to explore other critical aspects of fire safety, such as evacuating people during emergencies.

Overcoming Navigation Challenges in Smoky Conditions

One of the most significant challenges in developing the fire rescue assistant drone was enabling it to navigate through smoky conditions effectively. This challenge was addressed by the team at the Control Systems and Robotics Laboratory, led by Prof. Ameer Mulla.

Prof. Mulla elaborated on how their team overcame the obstacle of navigating the drone in smoke-filled environments, a breakthrough that has applications beyond fire safety. He highlighted the potential use of this technology in crowd management scenarios at large gatherings, such as railway stations, malls, and pilgrimage centers.

The ability to navigate through smoke and low-visibility conditions is crucial for the effective deployment of the fire rescue assistant drone. By overcoming this challenge, the team at IIT Dharwad has paved the way for more efficient and safer emergency response operations, potentially saving lives and minimizing property damage.

Furthermore, the successful development of this technology demonstrates the cutting-edge research and innovation capabilities of IIT Dharwad and its dedicated team of researchers and students.

Fostering Innovation and Technological Advancements

The unveiling of the fire rescue assistant drone at IIT Dharwad serves as a testament to the institute's commitment to fostering innovation and technological advancements. During the inaugural session of the DDANFR 2024 workshop, IIT Dharwad's Director, Venkappayya Desai, emphasized the historical establishment of IITs and their significant contributions to the development of various projects, including the pioneering bio-toilets for Indian Railways.

Desai's remarks highlighted the crucial role that IITs play in driving technological progress and providing innovative solutions to real-world problems. The fire rescue assistant drone exemplifies this commitment, addressing a critical need in fire safety and emergency response.

The workshop featured keynote speakers from esteemed institutions, including Bhaskar Dixit from Jain University and Siva Bathina, a post-doctoral researcher from IIT Madras. These collaborations and knowledge-sharing opportunities further underscore the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in driving innovation and addressing complex challenges.

IIT Dharwad's dedication to fostering an environment conducive to research, development, and innovation has led to groundbreaking achievements like the fire rescue assistant drone. By nurturing talented researchers, engineers, and students, the institute is paving the way for a future where technological advancements continue to improve lives and contribute to societal progress.
