India host 3rd Voice of Global South Summit: Key Highlights

Summit Overview and Objectives

• Third Voice of Global South Summit held virtually on August 17, 2024
• Theme: "An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future"
• Hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
• Aims to provide a platform for developing countries to voice their needs and aspirations
• Extends Modi's vision of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas aur Sabka Prayas'
• Rooted in the Indian philosophy of  'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (The world is one family)
• Focuses on sustainable development goals and women-led initiatives
• Addresses key areas including development, climate change, health, and energy security

Global Challenges and Summit Agenda

• PM Modi highlighted global uncertainties, including:
  • Ongoing impact of COVID-19
  • Challenges posed by ongoing conflicts
  • Climate change concerns
  • Issues of health, food, and energy security
• Summit aims to discuss complex challenges affecting the world, particularly developing countries
• Emphasis on unity among Global South countries to address these challenges

India's Role and Contributions

• Under India's G20 presidency, the agenda was shaped by Global South expectations and priorities

• • Setting up hospitals, ventilators, and Jan Aushadhi centers in Africa and Pacific Islands
  • Assistance to countries like Papua New Guinea and Kenya
  • Humanitarian aid provided during conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine
• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar representing India
• All Global South countries invited to participate
• Over 100 countries participated in previous summits (January and November 2023)
• Insights from previous summits incorporated into G20 discussions and New Delhi Leaders' Declaration
