Prem Singh Tamang Takes Oath as Sikkim CM for Second Term

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), led by Prem Singh Tamang, won 31 out of 32 seats in the recent state assembly elections, paving the way for Tamang to assume the Chief Minister's office for a second consecutive term.

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) led by Prem Singh Tamang secured a resounding victory in the recent state assembly elections, winning an impressive 31 out of the 32 seats. This landslide win has paved the way for Tamang to assume the Chief Minister's office for a second consecutive term. The opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), headed by former CM Pawan Chamling, managed to secure only one seat.

Tamang's Oath-Taking Ceremony

On June 10, 2024, Prem Singh Tamang took the oath of office and secrecy as the Chief Minister of Sikkim in a ceremony held at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok. The 56-year-old politician was administered the oath by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. Alongside Tamang, 11 other ministers were also sworn in, including Sonam Lama, Arun Kumar Upreti, Samdup Lepcha, and Bhim Hang Limboo, among others.

Vision for Second Term

In his address, Tamang expressed gratitude to the people of Sikkim for their overwhelming support and described the party's victory as a "record" owing to the peaceful conduct of the elections. He vowed to fulfill all the promises made during the election campaign within the next five years. Tamang acknowledged the hard work of his party workers and thanked the public for their trust.

SKM's Electoral Journey

The SKM's electoral journey has been remarkable. In the 2019 assembly elections, the party won 17 seats, while the SDF secured 15 seats. However, in the 2024 polls, the SKM's performance was unprecedented, securing 31 out of the 32 seats. The party had initially aligned with the BJP-led NDA in 2019 but later contested the assembly elections independently.

Sikkim's Political Landscape

Sikkim has a rich political history. The Buddhist kingdom was ruled by the Namgyal Chogyal dynasty from 1642 to 1975 and became an associate state of India in 1974. After a special referendum in 1975, Sikkim merged with India and became the 22nd state. Prem Singh Tamang is the sixth person to assume the Chief Minister's office in Sikkim, following Kazi Lhendup Dorjee, Nar Bahadur Bhandari, Bhim Bahadur Gurung, Sanchaman Limboo, and Pawan Kumar Chamling.

As Sikkim embarks on a new era under Tamang's leadership, the expectations are high, and the people eagerly await the fulfillment of the promises made by the SKM during the elections.
