Suhelwa Wildlife Sanctuary: 5th New Tiger Reserve in UP

Uttar Pradesh is set to establish its fifth tiger reserve, the Suhelwa Wildlife Sanctuary, due to the growing tiger population. The sanctuary, covering 452 square kilometers, is home to a diverse array of species including tigers, leopards, deer, bears, wolves, monkeys, and avian life.

Uttar Pradesh is set to welcome its fifth tiger reserve, as the Suhelwa Wildlife Sanctuary (SWS) has shown promising signs of tiger population growth. This announcement was made during the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR), marking a significant milestone in the state's efforts towards wildlife conservation and habitat protection.

Suhelwa Wildlife Sanctuary: A Thriving Biodiversity Hotspot

The Suhelwa Wildlife Sanctuary, spanning an area of 452 square kilometers across the districts of Balrampur, Shravasti, and Gonda, has proven to be a haven for diverse flora and fauna. This rich ecosystem, comprising a mix of deciduous and semi-evergreen woodlands, is home to a variety of species, including tigers, leopards, deer, bears, wolves, monkeys, and a wide array of avian life.

The Centre's tiger census report, released in April 2022, provided photographic evidence of tigers in Suhelwa for the first time, solidifying the sanctuary's significance as a potential tiger reserve. This discovery has paved the way for the state to establish its fifth tiger reserve, joining the ranks of Pilibhit, Amangarh, Ranipur, and Bijnor.

Strengthening Conservation Efforts and Addressing Challenges

The decision to establish a new tiger reserve in Suhelwa highlights the state government's commitment to conserving and protecting India's national animal and its habitat. However, the process requires approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), and the state is currently working on the proposal to be submitted.

During the PTR anniversary celebration, Manoj Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, acknowledged the staffing shortages at PTR and assured that these vacancies would be filled soon. Additionally, he addressed the growing tiger population in Bijnor, which has driven leopards into rural and urban areas, causing human-wildlife conflicts.

To mitigate these conflicts, the authorities have set a target to construct a 90-kilometer chain link fencing this year, primarily to prevent leopards from straying into human settlements. This proactive measure underscores the state's commitment to balancing conservation efforts with the safety and well-being of local communities.

Enhancing Eco-tourism and Boosting Workforce

The state's efforts extend beyond establishing the new tiger reserve. Singh praised the eco-tourism management at Chuka in PTR, highlighting a recent report that showed Pilibhit had the highest number of tiger sightings during safaris. This recognition not only boosts the state's tourism potential but also raises awareness about the importance of preserving these natural habitats.

Furthermore, Sudhir Kumar Sharma, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF) for UP, announced the recruitment of 1,300 new forest inspectors this year, addressing the shortage of field forest staff. This move aims to ensure better management and oversight of the state's forest reserves and wildlife sanctuaries.

Additionally, the state is exploring a public-private partnership program to be launched as a pilot project. This initiative aims to bridge various gaps, including financial ones, and enhance the overall management and conservation efforts within the state's protected areas.

The establishment of the new tiger reserve in Suhelwa, coupled with the state's commitment to addressing staffing challenges, enhancing eco-tourism, and exploring innovative partnerships, signifies a holistic approach towards wildlife conservation and habitat protection in Uttar Pradesh. As the state embarks on this journey, it not only safeguards its rich biodiversity but also contributes to the global efforts in preserving these majestic creatures and their natural habitats for future generations.
