The Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan recently launched SWAYAM Plus, a platform for online courses in higher education. SWAYAM Plus aims to make quality learning accessible for all by offering online degree and diploma programs covering a wide range of subjects.

About SWAYAM Plus Platform

SWAYAM Plus is an indigenous platform of Ministry of Education providing online degree and diploma courses. It hosts high-quality learning material of full online courses for students of Class 11th and 12th as well as undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The platform has been designed to achieve the 3 cardinal principles of Education Policy - access, equity and quality. It seeks to democratize education by taking online courses to the remotest parts of the country.

SWAYAM Plus integrates the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform SWAYAM and the undergraduate platform of University Grants Commission (UGC) titled Bachelors of Arts/ Science Degree with Multiple Exits to create a holistic online education ecosystem.

Enhancing Gross Enrollment Ratio: Flexible policies like Academic Bank of Credits and Multiple Entry/Exit Interfaces help increase GER. Easy access improves affordability of quality higher education.

Bridging urban-rural divide: Vernacular content on SWAYAM Plus coupled with Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing will take quality education to remote areas lacking educational infrastructure.

Way Forward

The Education Minister outlined a vision to continuously evolve India's digital learning ecosystem to offer flexible, personalized and unequalled education as per global standards. SWAYAM Plus lays the groundwork by striving to upgrade the Gross Enrollment Ratio in higher education including professional and vocational education to 50 percent by 2035 as targeted by NEP 2020.
