Turkey Unveils Kizilelma (KAAN) - Its First Homegrown 5th Generation Stealth Fighter

Turkey's Aerospace Industries (TAI) has conducted the maiden test flight of the Kizilelma (KAAN) stealth fighter jet, slated to enter active service by 2030. The KAAN project, which began in 2011 as a twin-engine all-weather air superiority fighter jet, has accelerated development timelines and is expected to become operational by 2030.

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) recently made history by conducting the maiden test flight of the highly anticipated Kizilelma (translated as Red Apple) stealth fighter jet, slated to enter active service by 2030. Dubbed the KAAN project and positioned as a rival to Lockheed Martin's formidable F-35 Lightning II, the aircraft promises to push Turkey into an elite league of nations possessing indigenous fifth-generation combat jet capabilities.

Origins of the Ambitious KAAN Project

The origins of the KAAN project date back to 2011 when Turkey outlined plans for developing a twin-engine all-weather air superiority fighter jet under the TF-X national fighter aircraft development program aligned to replace its aging F-16s. ([1])

The ambitious roadmap envisioned Turkey's aerospace industry acquiring state-of-art capabilities for developing a fifth-generation plus category combat aircraft. However, the program faced delays in 2015 when Turkey was barred from participating in building the F-35 jets over security concerns - accelerating indigenous efforts.

Accelerated Development Timelines

As per reports, the preliminary design phase of the KAAN fighter was completed by Turkish Aerospace in 2021 in a short time frame of 18 months - demonstrating accelerated momentum. ([2])

The fighter is now projected to become operational by 2030 - five years ahead of the original 2035 timeline - highlighting the renewed impetus and technical advances underpinning the program.

Advanced Design and Capabilities

The twin-engine single-seat fighter with two vertical tails is designed for all weather operations, air dominance and strike roles encompassing air-to-air, air-to-ground and maritime strike missions. ([3])

With a length of 19 meters, wingspan of 12 meters and maximum takeoff weight of 27,000 kg; the KAAN will reportedly achieve Mach 2 speeds with an operational range of 1100 km, service ceiling of 55,000 feet and ability of sustained 45° angle of climb.

It will integrate cutting edge avionics, AESA radars, next-gen electronic warfare and sensor fusion capabilities for network centric warfare operations with lower radar cross section compared to conventional aircraft.

First Test Flight Milestone

The first 90-minute KAAN test sortie on January 5, 2024 - led by distinguished test pilot Akin Ozturk - demonstrated flawless results for basic flight parameters, stability and controllability at varying altitudes to validate design efficacy - a pivotal milestone in its development cycle. ([4])

Strengthening Strategic Autonomy of Turkey

Development of the KAAN is critical for Turkey to achieve freedom from dependency or restrictions for meeting critical national security objectives - termed as "strategic autonomy" in defence parlance.

By reducing reliance on imports and geopolitical risks associated with foreign procurements for the airforce's operational readiness, the success of this indigenous 5th gen fighter project will be a litmus test for Turkey's future defence indigenization capabilities.

In summary, the unveiling of the KAAN marks a major accomplishment for Turkey's aerospace ecosystem. Its induction over the next decade will significantly enhance the potency of Turkish airpower assets in contested geographies while catalyzing innovation in deep tech arenas.
