India Talks to the Taliban During Geopolitical Changes

India has been more active with the Taliban in recent months. This action coincides with regional geopolitical shifts. Since taking over Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban have aimed to forge closer ties with India. Amidst shifting alliances and regional instability, India seeks to safeguard its national and security interests.

Important Elements Affecting India's Involvement
A number of important considerations influenced India's decision to negotiate with the Taliban. First of all, Pakistan, which formerly backed the Taliban, is now an enemy. In the wake of airstrikes that killed civilians, tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban have increased. Second, Iran's focus on its own regional issues, especially in the wake of Israel's military actions against its proxies, has caused its influence to decline.

Russia's Shifting Position
Russia is now more focused on its ongoing war in Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin has stated that he is willing to work with the Taliban because he sees them as allies in the fight against terrorism. Russia had previously categorized the Taliban as a terrorist organization, so this represents a shift. Relationships in the area have been reevaluated as a result of the changing circumstances in Afghanistan.

China's Increasing Power
China's influence in Afghanistan has been growing. China wants to use Afghanistan's natural resources by sending ambassadors and working on development projects. In contrast to the withdrawal of Western nations, the Taliban have welcomed this support. The expansion of China's Belt and Road Initiative into Afghanistan has increased India's concerns.

The United States's role
Another level of complexity is introduced by the possibility of Donald Trump's return to the White House. The US withdrew its troops after the previous Trump administration began negotiations with the Taliban. India is cautious about possible changes to US policy that could impact its strategic objectives in Afghanistan. These worries are reflected in the timing of India's diplomatic missions.

Development and Humanitarian Assistance
India has pledged to support Afghanistan's development and humanitarian efforts. The Taliban have conveyed gratitude for India's previous projects, which span two decades and amount to about USD 3 billion. Despite the Taliban's contentious rule, the Indian government wants to continue to have an impact and help the Afghan people.

India's Security Concerns
India's top priority is still to stop terrorism from coming from Afghanistan. India has received assurances from the Taliban that it will fight against threats from organizations such as the Islamic State Khorasan Province. For New Delhi, protecting Indian personnel and interests in Afghanistan is of utmost importance.

Final Thoughts on the Engagement Strategy
India has a multifaceted approach to engagement with the Taliban that takes security imperatives and regional dynamics into account. To preserve stability and safeguard national interests in Afghanistan, a cautious approach is required due to the changing geopolitical environment.
