LingoSat: Japan introduces World's First Wooden Satellite

Japan has launched the world's first wooden satellite, LignoSat, developed by Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry. The satellite, measuring 10 cm on each side, will be launched on a SpaceX rocket to the International Space Station (ISS) for a 6-month mission.

Introducing LignoSat

  • World's first wooden satellite, developed by Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry
  • Designed to test the viability of wood as a material for space applications
  • Measures just 10 cm on each side, with a box-like structure

Mission and Objectives

  • Launched on a SpaceX rocket to the International Space Station (ISS)
  • Will be deployed into orbit about 400 km above Earth for a 6-month mission
  • Aims to collect data on how wood withstands extreme space conditions
  • Measures the impact of space radiation on wood and electronic components
  • Explores the potential of using wood for future lunar and Mars exploration

Advantages of Wood in Space

  • Wood does not rot or ignite in the absence of moisture and oxygen in space
  • Reduces environmental impact as wooden satellites harmlessly burn up on re-entry
  • Avoids release of harmful metal particles that can affect the environment and telecommunications
  • Aligns with vision of sustainable space exploration and habitation

The Team and Inspiration

  • Led by former Japanese astronaut Takao Doi and researchers from Kyoto University
  • Draws inspiration from early 20th century airplanes made of wood
  • Envisions a future where humans can plant trees and build timber houses on the Moon and Mars
  • Seeks to utilize materials that can be produced on Earth for space applications
