Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2022-23

Overview

  • The recent household consumption expenditure survey (HCES) 2022-23 results shed light on living standards in rural and urban India, estimated as the monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE).

  • The results broadly confirmed the substantial rise in non-income aspects of living standards, noted by the multidimensional poverty reports of the UN and NITI Aayog previously.

Findings

  • The HCES offers many reassuring findings on inclusive growth in the past decade. The MPCE in 2022-23 increased in real terms by 40% in rural and 33.5% in urban areas over 2011-12.

  • The rural-urban divide in MPCE in 2022-23 increased in real terms by 40% in rural and 33.5% in urban areas over 2011-12.

  • The rural-urban divide in MPCE has also declined considerably. Within rural and urban areas, the consumption of the lowest 5% of the MPCE population grew at a faster rate than the top 5% of the MPCE population grew at a faster rate than the top 5%, pointing to a decline in economic inequality over the last decade.

Final Thoughts

India’s position in global indexes highlights both its progress and challenges across multiple dimensions. While the country performs strongly in areas like innovation (40th in the Global Innovation Index 2023) and trust (2nd in Edelman Trust Barometer 2024), it still struggles with issues of hunger, press freedom, and gender equality, ranking low in related reports.

The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2022-23 brings optimism, showing improved living standards, reduced inequality, and stronger rural growth compared to the past decade.

Together, these indicators reflect a nation balancing rapid development with persistent socio-economic gaps. Continuous reforms and inclusive growth will be essential for India to rise higher in these international rankings while ensuring equitable prosperity for its citizens.
