NCR Road Connectivity Projects

The Centre has approved three major NCR road connectivity projects worth Rs 14,850 crore to improve travel in the National Capital Region (NCR).

These projects aim to reduce commute times for Delhi residents and enhance connectivity to important destinations such as Katra and Dehradun.

For SSC aspirants, these developments highlight significant strides in National Capital Region infrastructure development and the government’s commitment to upgrading urban transport.

Overview of the Major NCR Road Connectivity Projects

The new projects will focus on decongesting key areas in South East, South West, and East Delhi, including stretches like the Barapullah flyover, Ring Road, and Outer Ring Road (ORR).

These upgrades will connect critical zones such as Dwarka, Sarai Kale Khan, Kalindi Kunj, and key arterial roads to Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurgaon. This aligns with ongoing Delhi NCR highway construction and other road network improvements in NCR.

Extension of Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway

  • One of the flagship projects involves extending the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra National Expressway (NE-5) by 20 km from Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway to Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) in Delhi and Haryana.

  • This extension, estimated at Rs 4,000 crore, will connect the UER-II, Dwarka Expressway, and Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.

  • Officials state this will enhance expressway connectivity for traffic from Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and Punjab heading towards Central and Western India.

  • It will also provide an alternative to NH-44, helping to reduce congestion and vehicular pollution in Delhi. This is a key step in the government’s NCR traffic decongestion initiatives.

Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) Enhancements

  • UER-II, also known as Delhi’s third Ring Road, is nearing completion and is expected to open to the public by August 2025.

  • A 17-km extension will link UER-II to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Ghaziabad at an estimated cost of Rs 3,350 crore.

  • This extension will serve as a bypass for NH-44 and Delhi’s Outer and Inner Ring Roads, facilitating smoother travel to North, North West, West, and South Delhi, as well as Gurgaon.

  • This enhancement is part of the ongoing road network improvements in NCR aimed at diverting freight and long-distance traffic away from congested city roads like NH-48, NH-44, and the Barapullah corridor.

Eastern Extension of UER-II

  • The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) plans to extend the eastern part of UER-II from the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to Noida via Ghaziabad and Faridabad.

  • This 65-km stretch, costing Rs 7,500 crore, will connect major roads like the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, DND-Faridabad highway, and Yamuna Expressway.

  • This project will boost connectivity between Delhi and rapidly growing towns, including Loni, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Noida, and Faridabad.

  • It is a crucial part of NCR urban transport upgrades, providing high-speed alternative routes and helping to decongest internal roads such as ORR, Sarai Kale Khan, and Kalindi Kunj.

Final Thoughts

The NCR road connectivity projects are set to revolutionize travel across the National Capital Region by significantly easing traffic congestion and improving infrastructure.

With major expressway expansions and upgraded transport links, these initiatives will enhance connectivity between Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and surrounding areas, making commutes faster and more efficient.

These developments not only promise smoother urban mobility but also support the region’s long-term economic growth and sustainability.
