Rajnath Singh Launches 'SANJAY' Battlefield Surveillance System

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh officially launched the ‘SANJAY – The Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS)’ from the South Block in New Delhi. This indigenously developed system represents a significant advancement in India's defense technology, enhancing the surveillance capabilities of the Indian Army. SANJAY aims to improve battlefield transparency, boost situational awareness, and streamline intelligence collection, thereby revolutionizing modern warfare.

What is SANJAY – The Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS)?

SANJAY is an automated system designed to integrate data from multiple ground and aerial battlefield sensors. It processes the collected data, verifies its accuracy, eliminates duplication, and combines it to generate a Common Surveillance Picture (CSP). This unified battlefield view will be transmitted over a secure Army Data Network and Satellite Communication Network. SANJAY will play a crucial role in providing real-time, transparent insights into battlefield conditions.

How Does SANJAY Work?

SANJAY’s primary function is to gather, authenticate, and merge battlefield data into a centralized system. With advanced sensors and analytics, the system will monitor India’s extensive land borders, detect intrusions, and provide precise assessments of situations.

It is built to function in both conventional and sub-conventional military operations, and its integration into a Network Centric Environment will ensure seamless access to real-time battlefield data for commanders. This enhancement will significantly boost the Indian Army’s Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, optimizing operational efficiency.

Centralized Web Application and Decision Support System

A key feature of SANJAY is its Centralized Web Application, which will provide crucial data inputs to Command and Army Headquarters. It will also integrate with the Indian Army’s Decision Support System, allowing senior officials to analyze battlefield information and make informed strategic decisions, thereby improving operational effectiveness and preparedness.

Indigenous Development for Aatmanirbharta

Developed through a collaboration between the Indian Army and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the SANJAY BSS marks a significant step toward achieving 'Aatmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in defense technology. This initiative aligns with India’s focus on technological innovation and the 'Year of Technology Absorption.' The system also supports the ‘Make in India’ vision, demonstrating the nation’s capability to design and produce cutting-edge defense technologies. With an investment of Rs 2,402 crore, SANJAY will be a vital addition to the Indian Army’s modern defense infrastructure.

Induction and Rollout Plan

The deployment of SANJAY BSS will occur in three phases, starting in March 2025 and completing by October 2025. It will be introduced across the Indian Army’s Brigades, Divisions, and Corps, significantly enhancing battlefield surveillance and intelligence capabilities. This deployment aligns with the Ministry of Defence’s ‘Year of Reforms,’ focusing on the army’s modernization and technological transformation.

Key Stakeholders in the Flagging-Off Ceremony

The event was attended by several key figures from the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army, including Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary (Defence Production) Shri Sanjeev Kumar, and BEL Chairman & Managing Director Shri Manoj Jain. These officials played a pivotal role in the development and rollout of the SANJAY system.
