Goa Introduces Bima Sakhi Yojana to Empower Women

The Bima Sakhi Yojana, recently launched in Goa, aims to make insurance accessible to all citizens. Building on its successful rollout in Haryana, this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of empowering women and expanding financial inclusion. Targeting women aged 18 to 70 who have completed at least Class X education, the scheme seeks to enhance financial literacy and raise awareness about life insurance at the grassroots level.

Scheme Highlights

The Bima Sakhi Yojana focuses on training women to become LIC agents, equipping them with the skills to promote life insurance within their communities. Qualified participants will receive specialized training and a stipend for the first three years, fostering a network of female agents dedicated to increasing insurance penetration. This program is a step toward achieving the government’s goal of “insurance for all.”

Eligibility Requirements

To participate in the scheme, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Women aged 18 to 70 years are eligible.
  • A minimum educational qualification of Class X is required.
These criteria ensure a diverse pool of participants, including those previously excluded from financial opportunities.

Training and Financial Support

Participants will undergo extensive training to prepare them for their roles as LIC agents. During the training period, they will receive a monthly stipend:

  • Year 1: ₹7,000
  • Year 2: ₹6,000
  • Year 3: ₹5,000
Over three years, each participant can earn a total of ₹2.16 lakh, providing financial stability as they begin their new careers.

Role of Bima Sakhis

Bima Sakhis will play a crucial role in promoting life insurance by selling policies and educating their communities about its importance. This dual focus on policy sales and awareness aims to improve understanding and acceptance of life insurance across Goa. The government sees these women as vital contributors to the growth of the insurance sector.

Future Goals

LIC plans to recruit 200,000 Bima Sakhis over the next three years, with a target of placing at least one Bima Sakhi in every panchayat within a year. This expansion aligns with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which envisions a developed India by 2047.

Key Achievements and Features

  • Within a month of its launch, the scheme saw over 52,511 registrations.
  • Each Bima Sakhi can earn commissions on policies sold, further boosting their income.
  • The program targets women aged 18-70 with at least Class X education.
  • LIC aims to ensure every panchayat is served by a Bima Sakhi.

Community Impact

The Bima Sakhi Yojana is expected to significantly impact local communities by empowering women, promoting gender equality, and fostering economic independence. By increasing awareness and acceptance of life insurance, the scheme aims to enhance financial security for families and expand insurance coverage in Goa. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving financial inclusion and changing societal perceptions about life insurance.
