National Turmeric Board Established to Promote India’s ‘Golden Spice’

On January 14, 2025, Union Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the National Turmeric Board to assist turmeric farmers and boost exports. Based in Nizamabad, Telangana, the Board will focus on research and development and the global promotion of India's turmeric, which represents 70% of the world's production.

On January 14, 2025, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, launched the National Turmeric Board in New Delhi, appointing Shri Palle Ganga Reddy as its first Chairperson. The Board's headquarters is located in Nizamabad, Telangana, a key region for turmeric cultivation.

Focus on Farmer Welfare and Production Enhancement
The Board is dedicated to supporting turmeric farmers in 20 states, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Meghalaya. Its goals include promoting research on new turmeric varieties, enhancing value-added products for international markets, and raising awareness of turmeric’s health benefits. Special efforts will be made to boost productivity in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, areas with high potential for turmeric farming.

Composition and Collaborative Efforts
The Board consists of representatives from various ministries, including AYUSH, Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and Commerce, along with members from major turmeric-producing states and exporter organizations. This collaborative framework will ensure quality standards in turmeric production and exports, driving sectoral growth.

India’s Global Dominance in Turmeric Production
India is the world’s largest producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric, contributing over 70% of global production. In 2023-24, the country cultivated turmeric on over 3.05 lakh hectares, yielding 10.74 lakh tonnes. India accounts for more than 62% of global turmeric trade, exporting 1.62 lakh tonnes worth $226.5 million during the same period.

Prime Minister’s Endorsement
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support for the National Turmeric Board, highlighting its significance for India’s turmeric farmers. He emphasized that the Board would create better opportunities for innovation, global promotion, and value addition in turmeric production, strengthening supply chains for the benefit of both farmers and consumers.
