The term 'Mahaparinirvan' in Sanskrit signifies the ultimate nirvana or liberation. It involves various events, such as memorial services, discussions, seminars, and cultural programs. Supporters gather at significant sites like Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai to offer floral tributes and reflect on Ambedkar's contributions to Indian society. The term 'Mahaparinirvan' derives its significance from Buddhism's concept of Parinirvana, which symbolizes the attainment of nirvana, freedom both in life and after death. Dr. Ambedkar's embrace of Buddhism and renunciation of Hinduism align with the principles of Parinirvana, and the use of the term 'Mahaparinirvan Diwas' to mark his death highlights his revered Buddhist leadership.

 

Mahaparinirvan Diwas: 2023 Events

On 6th December 2023, Mahaparinirvan Diwas events are being held pan-India led by various state governments and Dalit organizations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tribute to Dr Ambedkar's statue located in the Parliament complex premises earlier in the day.

A march to Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai where Ambedkar was cremated is being held where lakhs gather to offer respects. Traffic diversions are in place.

Prayer ceremonies, memorial lectures, social initiatives like distribution of study materials, meals are being organized in states to celebrate Ambedkar's impact. The Indian embassy in Hungary also hosted a commemorative event highlighting Dr Ambedkar's global legacy in the field of education and human rights.

Many political leaders across party lines including President Droupadi Murmu paid homage underscoring Ambedkar's special place as driving force of social democracy in India through constitutional means.

 

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar: history and background

 

Full Name: Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar

Born on 14 April, 1891 into a poor low-Mahar caste family, who were treated as untouchables.

He Studied economics at Columbia University and the London School of Economics after facing discrimination in India. He Played a key role in drafting the Indian Constitution after India gained independence in 1947. He was India's first Law Minister. He Campaigned against social discrimination towards untouchables and the caste system. Pushed for the adoption of a Uniform Civil Code and reservations for depressed classes.

After resigning from Nehru's cabinet in 1953, continued fighting for Dalit rights and converted to Buddhism in 1956 calling for equality.

He made significant contributions in education, labor rights and shaped state policies to support economically/socially marginalized communities before his death in 1956. Often described as the Architect of Indian Constitution for his pivotal role though he faced criticism from some quarters for his reformist approach favoring depressed classes.

Father of Indian Constitution - He chaired the drafting committee of the Indian Constitution which lays the framework for the country's governance.

Champion of Social Justice - Inserted constitutional safeguards like right to equality, non-discrimination, freedom of religion, reservation of jobs/education seats to ensure upliftment of depressed classes.

Pioneer of Labor Rights - Helped formulate labor protection laws, emphasized right to collective bargaining to address exploitation of industrial workers.

Policy Reforms - Architect of state policies related to water management, public distribution system ensuring essential supplies to poor, land reforms granting property rights etc.

Educationist - Strong advocate for compulsory school education. Set up People's Education Society running colleges till today focused on marginalized sections.

Economist - Authored scholarly publications analyzing India's economy and financial system. Suggested stabilization measures like state ownership of insurance, clear tax framework.

Nation Builder - Vision of inclusive development, harmony and social transformation embodied in the constitution's liberal, democratic, secular tenets continue to drive India's progress as a welfare state.

In essence, Babasaheb Ambedkar was both the chief architect of India's constitutional vision as well as pioneering policymaker across domains aiming to build an equitable and empowered nation.
