On March 8th, 2024, the world will come together to celebrate International Women's Day, a global movement that honors the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while continuing to call for gender parity. This year's theme, "Invest in women: Accelerate Progress," emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive world where everyone has access to the same opportunities, resources, and dignities, regardless of gender.

History of International Women's Day

International Women's Day has its roots dating back to the early 20th century when women around the world were fighting for their rights, including the right to vote, work, and hold public office. The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, when the Socialist Party of America designated a day to honor the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York City, where women protested against inhumane working conditions.

The idea of having an international women's day was first proposed at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910. The following year, on March 19, 1911, International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with rallies and protests demanding women's rights to work, vote, hold public office, and end discrimination.

After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8th became a national holiday there. The day was eventually adopted by the United Nations in 1975, which began celebrating it as the United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace.

The Significance of International Women's Day 2024

International Women's Day 2024 arrives at a pivotal time when the world is grappling with issues of gender inequality, discrimination, and the intersections of race, class, and gender. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated many of these challenges, disproportionately impacting women and girls worldwide. According to the United Nations, the pandemic has led to an increase in gender-based violence, decreased access to education and healthcare for women and girls, and a significant setback in progress towards gender equality.

International Women's Day 2024 is a call to action to address these inequalities and made effort to make women independent, capable and a place in equitable society. It recognizes that while progress has been made, true equality cannot be achieved without addressing the systemic barriers and biases that prevent women from fully participating in all aspects of life.

Key Areas of Focus for International Women's Day 2024

1. Economic Empowerment and Financial Inclusion

One of the primary areas of focus for International Women's Day 2024 is promoting women's economic empowerment and financial inclusion. Despite significant progress, women still face numerous barriers in accessing equal opportunities in the workforce, such as gender pay gaps, occupational segregation, and limited access to finance and resources.

Initiatives to support women's entrepreneurship, provide equal pay for equal work, and promote women's leadership in various sectors will be highlighted. Organizations and governments will be encouraged to implement policies and programs that enable women to participate fully in the economy and achieve financial independence.

2. Education and Skills Development

Education is a fundamental human right and a key driver of gender equality. However, millions of girls around the world still face barriers to accessing quality education due to poverty, cultural norms, and gender-based violence. International Women's Day 2024 will emphasize the importance of ensuring equal access to education for girls and women, from primary education to higher learning and vocational training.

Initiatives to promote girls' education, provide scholarships and mentorship programs, and support women's lifelong learning and skills development will be highlighted. Additionally, efforts to challenge gender stereotypes and promote gender-sensitive curricula will be encouraged.

3. Gender-Based Violence and Discrimination

Gender-based violence and discrimination remain pervasive issues that affect women and girls worldwide. International Women's Day 2024 will bring attention to the urgent need to address and eliminate all forms of violence and discrimination against women, including domestic violence, sexual harassment, human trafficking, and harmful traditional practices.

Campaigns and initiatives to raise awareness, provide support services for survivors, and strengthen laws and policies to prevent and combat gender-based violence will be promoted. Additionally, efforts to challenge harmful gender norms, stereotypes, and biases that perpetuate discrimination and inequality will be highlighted.

4. Women's Leadership and Political Participation

Despite progress in some countries, women remain underrepresented in leadership positions and decision-making processes across various sectors, including politics, business, and civil society. International Women's Day 2024 will emphasize the importance of promoting women's leadership and political participation as a crucial aspect of achieving gender equality and sustainable development.

Initiatives to support women's leadership programs, increase women's representation in government and corporate boards, and foster an enabling environment for women's participation in public life will be highlighted. Additionally, efforts to address the unique challenges and barriers faced by women in leadership roles, such as gender-based discrimination and work-life balance, will be addressed.

Initiatives that promote women's leadership and participation in environmental decision-making, support women's access to sustainable livelihoods and resources, and address the gendered impacts of climate change will be emphasized. Additionally, efforts to integrate gender perspectives into climate policies and programs will be encouraged.

Global Celebrations and Initiatives

International Women's Day 2024 will be celebrated globally through various events, campaigns, and initiatives organized by governments, civil society organizations, private sector entities, and individuals. These celebrations will take many forms, including marches, rallies, conferences, exhibitions, and online campaigns.

Many organizations will launch campaigns and initiatives to raise awareness about gender equality issues, highlight the achievements of women leaders and changemakers, and call for action to address the remaining challenges. Social media platforms will play a significant role in amplifying the voices and stories of women from diverse backgrounds, as well as promoting discussions and dialogue on gender-related topics.

Furthermore, companies and corporations will be encouraged to support and participate in International Women's Day activities, such as hosting panel discussions, offering mentorship programs, and implementing policies and practices that promote gender equality and women's empowerment within their organizations.

Governments around the world will also organize events and initiatives to commemorate International Women's Day 2024. These may include launching national campaigns, introducing new policies or legislation to advance gender equality, or recognizing the contributions of women in various fields through awards and honors.

Way forward

International Women's Day 2024 is a moment to celebrate the progress made towards gender equality while acknowledging the work that remains to be done. By embracing equity and addressing the systemic barriers and biases that prevent women from fully participating in all aspects of life, we can create a more just and equitable society for all.

This year's theme, " Invest in women: Accelerate Progress" serves as a powerful reminder that true equality cannot be achieved without addressing the intersections of gender, race, class, and other identities. It calls upon individuals, communities, organizations, and governments to take action and implement policies and programs that promote women's empowerment, leadership, and participation in all spheres of life.

As we commemorate International Women's Day 2024, let us renew our commitment to achieving gender equality and creating a world where every woman and girl can realize her full potential, free from discrimination, violence, and inequality. By working together and amplifying the voices of women worldwide, we can create a brighter future for all.
